Will Picture Books Remain Relevant?

We certainly thought so in 2016 – and we still do! It’s backed by multiple research studies, and, as a recent Psychology Today article summarized, reading simple picture books to the very young – even in the womb apparently – has shown tremendous benefits to future learning and, cognitive and deductive reasoning. Learning that goes beyond simply identifying ‘this is a ball’ to such as, ‘this is a ball, therefore it is round and it may bounce’.

But the act of reading picture books together also helps build vocabulary and understanding of “words that parents don’t often use regularly in everyday speech,” thereby expanding children’s learning capabilities.

We also strongly agree with the overall findings that the simple act of reading together also helps in bonding with a child and can be a less hectic environment to support life-long reading and learning.

So, if you’ve been mulling around an idea for a printed picture book – go for it – signs are good that they are here to stay!
